We are rehabbing poor Toots after her knee surgery last month, so we went through my two books to come up with some easier outings for her. A great one is a romp at Nevada Beach, just over the state line. Just past the Lakeside Inn Casino in South Lake Tahoe, take the first left at the light onto Kahle Drive and find the trailhead parking immediately on your right.
On this hike, you walk through Rabe Meadow, making your way to Lake Tahoe’s Nevada Beach. Numerous side trails exist to extend your walk if you like, and side trips will take you to small streams and rock outcroppings. Along the way, signs tell you about the history of the area from the early Washoe to the Rabe family.
When the campground is open during the summer season, dogs are restricted to leashes and away from the beach. In the off-season now, you will find the area less restrictive. Currently, there is no snow on the trail, but later in the season, the scene will be a picturesque wonderland of well-compacted snow. You will not need to bring snowshoes to enjoy this popular area. Although many enjoy this trek, you will still enjoy the solitude and sounds of nature. If anyone in your group is new to hiking or rehabbing like my four-legged companion, you will find this a great place to visit.
Get out and enjoy the season. Merry Christmas and enjoy many Happy Trails in the New Year.
